| What is GSM? |
| GSM stands for "Global System for Mobile communications" which basically means its the network which mobile phones work on. When you call someone on your mobile phone you are accessing the GSM wireless network which connects you to the receiving phone. |
| Why use a GSM intercom instead of cheaper wired intercoms? |
| Hard wired systems are quite a bit cheaper but can cost a lot more in the long run, especially if the intercom is to be added to an existing gate/barrier system as trenches have to be dug, factor in the cost of cable, running cable through the house etc. Whereas GSM communication is wireless, it takes (in most cases) its power from the power supply at the gate control board, and an antenna goes up high nearby and that's it! No digging trenches back to your home, no drilling through walls and a quicker installation time. |

| Which network provider should I use? |
| This depends on your location, if you cannot get a phone signal where the intercom is to be fitted then this kit is not for you, as these are basically mobile phones in a box. It also depends on what masts are near to you, we supply Vodafone PAYG sim cards with our kits as they cover most of the UK but you may be in an area where Orange offer better signal. Try this link punch in your postcode and it will tell you which network providers are close to you the choose the appropriate provider, ignore Tetra as this is the police radio network. | What is CLI? |
| CLI stands for Caller Line Identification. This is a system used in the telephone industry to transmit the callers telephone number and display it onto the screen on a mobile phone. This is what allows you to look at you mobile phone and see who is calling you before you answer the call. This technology allows us to build access controls which work by looking at the CLI and comparing it to a phonebook, if the number is stored the caller is granted access. This feature is found across some of our intercoms but is the sole function of the CellEntry GSM Switch. |
| Do you provide a SIM card? |
| Yes all our kits come with a Vodafone PAYG SIM card. They come to us with £1 calling credit but after we have activated them etc they get despatched with around 70p credit. |
| Will any SIM card work? |
| Generally yes, but we have had occasions where a SIM card works perfectly well in a mobile phone but woulc not work when put into an intercom. But as a gerneral rule the majority of SIM cards will work fine. |
